It all started almost half a century ago...
Rod was a young savvy entrepreneur, on the lookout for a new business opportunity in his local community. He noticed a gap in the market for a store offering traditional grocery items, fresh fruit and vegetables and BBQ chickens, that was open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The first NightOwl store
This sparked an idea for Rod which then became a reality, when the first ever NightOwl opened its doors to the public along Milton Road in Auchenflower, Brisbane in 1975.
A Franchise was born
The brand was first franchised in 1987 with our first franchised store opening at New Farm in 1988. In 1995, NightOwl was floated on the stock exchange before being bought out by Retail Services Limited in 1996. Years later, the brand returned to private ownership and in 2007, NightOwl was bought by Adam & Katrina Adams, who had bought their first NightOwl store in Cairns in 2002.
Ahead of the trends
In the years to follow, the brand developed and improved procedures and offerings, all to cater to the needs of our customers. This saw NightOwl introduce Cheap Tuesdays, OwlCafe, OwlClub and WiseBuys in conjunction with refitting our stores with improved shopping layouts and also FrostBite Fun Walls, known as the “store of the future” design.
Growing a
national brand
With continued success throughout the years, we have rolled out over 80 stores across the country and continue to grow as one of Australia’s fastest growing independent convenience networks.
